The main hall of Kraftraum Hamborn: two long rows of black power racks and loaded barbells under industrial lighting, a lifter chalking his hands at the far end.

Sign-up fee

There is no joining fee and never has been.

€7
Day pass

Walk in, train, walk out. No account needed.

€3
Locker

Per month, if you want to leave your belt here.

€4,90
Shaker

Only because people keep asking for one.

€19,90 per month, collected by SEPA direct debit on the first working day. One-month term, four weeks notice to the end of the month. Under-18s, students and over-65s pay exactly the same, because a discount for one group is a surcharge on another. This paragraph is the entire small print.

The floor

Plate-loaded, not plugged in.

If a machine needs a screen and a firmware update to do a set of rows, it is not in this building. Everything here loads with cast iron and works when the power flickers.

  • A row of black plate-loaded machines with cast iron plates on the pins under a steel roof truss.

    Sixteen plate-loaded stations

Leg press, hack squat, chest press, high row, pulldown, calf. Old-school arms, no cables to fray.

  • A two-tier dumbbell rack holding hexagonal rubber dumbbells, chalk dust in the light.

    Dumbbells up to 60 kg

2 kg steps from 4 to 40, then 5 kg steps to 60. Two of every weight, so nobody waits.

  • A woman in a black tank top setting up for a deadlift on a wooden lifting platform.

    Four lifting platforms

Oak tops, bumper plates, calibrated bars. Chalk is allowed here and frankly expected.

  • An older member on a cable row machine while a younger member spots a bench press behind him.

    Fourteen power racks

Eleven benches between them. You will not be queueing for a rack at half six in the evening.

  • Stacked black cast iron olympic plates on a plate tree beside a chalk bowl and a worn leather lifting belt.

    Nine tonnes of cast iron

Plate trees at every station. Put it back where you found it and we will all get along fine.

  • The plain entrance of the gym: a bare steel turnstile and a card reader beside a glass door.

In at six, out at eleven

Card at the turnstile and you are on the floor. No queue, no clipboard, no guided tour.

Opening hours

Open before your shift and after it.

Hamborn works early. So do we. The doors are open seventeen hours a day on weekdays and there is no peak-time surcharge, because there is no surcharge for anything.

  • Monday06:00 – 23:00
  • Tuesday06:00 – 23:00
  • Wednesday06:00 – 23:00
  • Thursday06:00 – 23:00
  • Friday06:00 – 23:00
  • Saturday08:00 – 22:00
  • Sunday09:00 – 21:00

Two things worth knowing

  • The counter is staffed Monday to Friday 15:00 – 21:00 and Saturday 10:00 – 14:00. Outside those hours you get in with your card, and a coach is on the floor anyway.
  • Public holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia: 09:00 – 21:00. Closed on 24 and 31 December from 14:00, and all day on 25 December.

Free trial

One free day. No card, no call.

Send this and come in. You get a full day on the floor and, if you want it, twenty minutes with a coach who will show you where things are. We will not phone you afterwards — we do not have anyone whose job that is.

The plain entrance of the gym with a steel turnstile and a card reader.

Or just turn up

The trial day works without a form too. Come to the counter between 15:00 and 21:00 on a weekday, bring shoes, and say you are here for the free day.

FAQ

The questions we get at the counter.

Is €19,90 really everything?

Yes. €19,90 a month, €0 to join, no activation fee, no service charge, no annual card fee. The only other things you can pay us for are a day pass (€7), a locker (€3 a month) and a shaker (€4,90) — and none of the three is compulsory.

What is the minimum term?

One month. The contract runs month to month with four weeks notice to the end of a calendar month. There is no twelve-month tariff, so there is nothing cheaper to be talked into.

Do I have to book a slot?

No. There is no app, no slot system and no peak-time lock-out. With 1,400 m², fourteen racks and eleven benches, the floor takes the evening rush without a queue.

Can I train here if I have never lifted before?

That is most of the people who walk in. Your membership includes a free twenty-minute intro: a coach walks you round, sets up two or three machines to your height and shows you how to load a bar safely. Ask at the counter, no appointment needed.

Are there classes?

No, and that is deliberate. Classes need studios, instructors and timetables, and all three would be on your monthly bill. We put the money into iron and opening hours instead.

Is there parking?

Yes, free, in the yard behind the hall — 40 spaces, entrance from Jägerstraße. Tram 903 stops at Hamborn Rathaus, three minutes on foot.

Can I bring someone?

One guest a month comes in free with you. After that a day pass is €7. Guests need to be 16 or over and sign the gym rules at the counter.

How do I cancel?

Hand in a note at the counter or send an email to moin@kraftraum-hamborn.de. Four weeks to the end of the month, we confirm in writing, and nobody will ring you up to talk you out of it.
